Overview

The opportunity

The problem

Many new journals launch on a default template with thin metadata, inaccessible pages and third-party scripts, which makes them harder to trust, harder to index and harder to read.

Our answer

Open Journal Systems 3.5 — the established open-source platform — with a custom editorial theme and a search plugin, rather than a bespoke system. The theme adds what core OJS lacks (canonical URLs, richer descriptions, accessible pages) and loads no third-party scripts or fonts.

Who it serves

  • Researchers in molecular, cell, computational, plant and ecological biology
  • Reviewers and editors who need a clear, standard editorial workflow
  • Readers and indexers who rely on complete, machine-readable metadata

Its place in Trasportos

Our publishing line: long-horizon infrastructure for research communication, built to the metadata standards indexers expect.

What makes it distinct

01

Living Systems Research

Draft aims and scope across eight subject areas, from molecular and cell biology to evolution and ecology, with research articles and short reports.

02

A theme built for reading

An editorial “Bioscience” theme for OJS 3.5 with inline HTML full text, citation tools and self-hosted fonts; no core files modified.

03

Metadata indexers can use

Google Scholar citation tags, Dublin Core, OAI-PMH, a sitemap and feeds, with DOI support ready for a Crossref membership.

04

Search that says what it covers

A search-filter plugin for subjects, types and dates, with copy that is honest about metadata-only search until full-text indexing is configured.

Objective

Establish an open-access publishing imprint with a first journal whose platform meets indexing and accessibility expectations from day one.

Implementation

  1. OJS 3.5 installed and provisioned reproducibly in a local WSL environment with seeded configuration.

  2. A standalone theme plugin and a search plugin; core workflows (submission, review, production) left untouched.

  3. Canonical URLs, article and issue descriptions, and accessible static pages added where core OJS falls short.

  4. Deployment package and step-by-step cPanel guide prepared for thetrasportos.com/lsr.

Current state

In development. The journal is not yet accepting submissions, and its development site contains sample articles only. Launch needs hosting set-up, an ISSN, approved policies and the editorial board’s confirmation.

Outcome

No outcome figures are published yet. We will add them here once they are verified and the venture is ready to share them.
